Description:
Helping other people and changing lives is why most audiologists choose to enter the profession. Audiologists want to make an impact on the world and live a fulfilling life. When we leave, we want to know we made a difference.

In a recent Audiology Today (Jan/Feb 2013), a survey was reported by Auburn University that asked Audiologists the question "If you were to do it over again, would you choose a career in audiology?" Unfortunately almost 20% said they would not and almost 24% said they were undecided! These data suggest that a large proportion of audiologist do not appear to be passionate about their careers! The lack of passion indicates that some audiologists have lost their sense of purpose—the key ingredient in keeping us happy and excited about our careers.

What I have learned in my 15 years as a manager and from studying the lessons from many great leaders, are that careers can be spectacular if we truly engage in understanding our passions, our skills and our talents. These three ingredients provide us with the all-important PURPOSE that ignites our energy. However, that alone will not sustain us. Ownership of our purpose increases the drive and provides the proof that we are making a difference. Mastery of our purpose, by increasing our knowledge, will keep us fresh and creative. The final key is being present. By living fully in the moment, being absolutely present with everything we are doing and everyone we are helping provides a sense of connectedness, of oneness that is the base of serving others. This final key will be the foundation of how great of a difference we make in the world. POMP—purpose, ownership, mastery and presence is a powerful mixture that can change lives and careers. This eAudiology Web seminar will walk through each of these components: discovering one's purpose, finding areas of ownership, identifying steps towards greater mastery, and practicing staying present in every moment. At the end of the Web seminar, participants will leave with tools to create and sustain the career they have always envisioned.
