Description:
Do you find it disappointing when your patients do not follow through with your recommendations? Changing behaviors is not always easy. Motivational interviewing is a semi-directive, patient-centered counseling approach that has been used by and adapted for other healthcare fields to facilitate behavior change.

This eAudiology Web seminar will provide a brief introduction to motivational interviewing, review the evidence base regarding its effectiveness at changing health behaviors, and present potential strategies for how this counseling approach can be adapted for use in audiology.

M. Samantha Lewis, PhD is a Research Investigator at the Veteran Affairs (VA) Rehabilitation Research and Development (RR&D) National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research located at the Portland VA Medical Center and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery at the Oregon Health & Science University. She currently receives 100% of her funding from the VA RR&D Service.

Dr. Lewis has completed two workshops on the topic of motivational interviewing, as well as received training from the Ida Institute on the use of their motivational tools. Further, she is conducting research evaluating adaptations of motivational interviewing as a means for improving hearing-aid outcomes.
